Have you ever felt extreme anxiety and stress over something as simple as a test? One would think that the answer to this question is no. However, throughout the nation, standardized testing proves to be a beast that all levels of the American education system must overcome. Students, teachers, and school systems dread the end of the year knowing that testing season is looming over them. Standardized tests are tests that have been created to measure students’ knowledge of a certain topic. They are often made up of multiple-choice questions, and the standardization of these tests makes it easy to compare the scores. Standardized testing is typically used to grade students on the concepts they learned during the year, teachers get graded on how well they have taught the students, and schools and counties also get compared to others based on how well their students perform. This form of testing creates immense pressure and strain for anyone involved with them. Although some may argue that standardized testing is integral to knowing how well the education system is performing, it should be removed from the nation’s education system because of the pressure it puts on students, the time it takes away from teachers, and the effects it has on school systems.
