Planning and design for an outpatient student health center is a comprehensive task that involves great depth and understanding. There will need to be a balance between available space, safety, functionality and colors, and furnishings. The planning process will need to account for the needs of the student health center along with the services offered. A stress-free and appealing environment is a priority. The design will address the rules and regulations, the color selection and noise issues, list of equipment needed, and electronic items needed. Regulatory requirements are no stranger to health care facilities. The challenge with creating a student health center for a high school boarding school is that this will be the first of its kind in Alaska and will be geared more towards that of a college health center/outpatient clinic. “To address the problems of errors in healthcare and serious safety issues, fundamental changes of health care process, culture, and the physical environment are necessary and need to be aligned, so that the caregivers and the resources that support them are set up for enabling safe care”(Reiling, Hughes, Murphy, 2008).
