Oceanographer

Oceanography is one of many unique geological studies. It focuses on the depths of the ocean and the air above it. That includes everything from the studying of tropical storms to the studying of the beautiful coral reaves along the coasts. Oceanography helps us understand the how the ocean works and how we can keep it healthy. Both people and the ocean benefit from this study. The people who study oceanography are known as oceanographers.

Oceanographers have been around for nearly one hundred and fifty years. The role of the early oceanographer usually involved studying the air and water currents of the sea. This allowed ships to sail more easily and accurately than ever before. The advancements in oceanography opened the doors for better trade and more exploration around the world.

The oceanographer plays a slightly different role in modern times. Navigation has been nearly perfected over the years, so the focus has been shifted towards the scientific understanding of the ocean and its creatures. For example, the chemical oceanographer studies the chemical properties of the ocean. They study the chemical effects of pollution in the ocean such as oil and garbage. Their research is used to clean up the ocean and protect it from chemical harm. There are several other types oceanographers such as geographic oceanographers, who study the sea floor, and biological oceanographers, who study marine life.

To become an oceanographer you will at least need a bachelor’s degree. This will grant u a lower level job as an oceanographer. An estimated twenty colleges offer a bachelor’s degree in oceanography. To get a higher ranking

job as an oceanographer you will need to continue schooling for up to eight years, which can be quite difficult. As an oceanographer you should plan on making between 65,000 to95,000 a year depending on the amount of schooling you took.
