Change. Hope. Future. All of these words can be used to describe our 44th President of the United States of America, Barack Obama the 2nd. He broke barriers, shattered stereotypes, and killed cliches. President Obama was able to take the position as president as an African American, an unprecedented accomplishment. President Obama also took steps towards free universal healthcare, a policy supported by millions of Americans, as well as many, many other accomplishments. Barack Obama was able to overcome overwhelming odds, and succeed as a president.

 

Barack Hussein Obama II was born August 4, 1961, to his mother, Ann Dunham, and father, Barack Obama Sr.(“About” barackobama.com).They separated shortly after Barack Jr. was born, leaving him to be raised mostly by his two grandparents. When Barack Jr. was six years old, he and his mother moved to Jakarta, Indonesia. This familiarized him with the struggles that other countries faced. He grew up around poverty and illness, and he rarely had the privilege of electricity in his home. When Barack reached the age of ten, his mother sent him back to Hawaii to live with his grandparents in their apartment. At his school in Hawaii, he is one of the few African American children in his class. This gave him some of his first exposure to racism, as his classmates refer to him as “The black kid from Indonesia(“Barack Obama Timeline” barack-obama-timeline.com) This racism that he faced in school propelled him to try and reach full equality between African Americans and white people. When Barack Obama reached high school, he was a leader in his class, but he still didn’t feel like he belonged, which led him to experimenting with alcohol and other drugs. In 1979, Barack enters Occidental College, where he befriends several African American students, but he still doesn’t feel like he fits in beside them. After he graduated, he worked as a community organizer in Chicago. In 1988, Barack entered Harvard law school, where he graduated magna cum laude. All of these parts of his life were stepping stones into his lucrative career as a politician(“Barack Obama Timeline” barack-obama-timeline.com).
